Bengaluru, October 28, 2025: Justice Tara Vitasta Ganju was ceremoniously sworn in as a Judge of the Karnataka High Court on Tuesday.
The oath of office was administered by the Chief Justice of the Karnataka High Court, Justice Vibhu Bakhru, at the court premises in Bengaluru, marking her official transfer from the Delhi High Court.
This appointment follows the Supreme Court Collegium’s recommendation in August 2025, transferring Justice Tara Vitasta Ganju from the Delhi High Court to Karnataka. The Central Government issued the transfer notification on October 14, 2025.
Background and Education
Born in 1971, Justice Ganju completed her Bachelor of Laws (LL.B.) from the Faculty of Law, University of Delhi, in 1995. In 1999, she was awarded the prestigious British Chevening Scholarship and pursued advanced studies in law in the United Kingdom.
With nearly three decades of distinguished practice before the Delhi High Court, she has represented a broad spectrum of legal matters including civil, property, inheritance, arbitration, company, criminal, and intellectual property laws, under both original and appellate jurisdictions.
Judicial Journey and Delhi High Court Tenure
Justice Tara Vitasta Ganju was elevated as a Judge of the Delhi High Court on May 18, 2022. During her tenure, she earned respect for her balanced judicial approach and her nuanced understanding of procedural and substantive law.
However, her transfer from Delhi to Karnataka drew significant resistance from the legal fraternity. The Delhi High Court Bar Association (DHCBA), its Women Lawyers’ Group, and several senior advocates formally expressed their dissent, addressing a letter to Chief Justice of India, Hon’ble Justice B.R. Gavai, seeking reconsideration of the transfer.
Emotional Farewell at Delhi High Court
Justice Ganju’s farewell ceremony at the Delhi High Court on Monday was marked by poignant moments. While acknowledging the support of her family, she became visibly emotional upon seeing her daughter in tears.
In a heartfelt moment that moved the courtroom, Justice Ganju smiled and said,
“If you cry, I will cry.”
This remark captured the emotional essence of her farewell and resonated deeply with members of the Bar and Bench present.
New Chapter in Karnataka High Court
With her oath now administered, Justice Tara Vitasta Ganju begins her new chapter in the Karnataka High Court. The legal community anticipates her vast experience and empathetic judicial temperament will add strength to the Bench in Bengaluru.
